A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of pacing a remarkable young athlete, 12-year-old Knox, who has recently discovered a passion for running. His mother, Rocio Ocampo (MomDuty) whom im coaching, approached me with a request to guide Knox in the Samsung Galaxy Earth Day 5K. Initially, I was hesitant—could I inspire a child a fourth my age without overwhelming him? My experience pushing students to their limits sometimes left them frustrated, but embracing this challenge could be a chance to be the mentor I had always wished for.

Knox’s best time for a 5K was 33 minutes, but based on his performance during our weekly group speed sessions, I was confident he could break 30 minutes. Despite his struggles to keep up with the faster runners, his determination never wavered.

On race day, filled with excitement, I asked Knox if he was ready to break the 30-minute barrier. His affirmative response was more confident than many of my life decisions! As the race began, it quickly became clear that Knox would far exceed the 30-minute mark. Pushing him to the limits of what he could handle, Knox finished with a new personal record of 26 minutes!

However, it wasn’t without struggle. In the final 200 meters, running a pace of 4:10 per kilometer, Knox wanted to quit. He was pale and gasping for air, but I knew he had more to give. With encouragement, he gathered his remaining strength and sprinted across the finish line.

The following week, Knox’s newfound confidence and skills were evident as he supported his mom in achieving a new personal best in the 5k. This outcome not only filled me with immense pride but also joy.

This experience is a reminder that we often have more to give than we initially believe. By pushing our limits, we discover that we are capable of far more than our doubts suggest. Let Knox’s story inspire you to test your boundaries and achieve beyond what you perceive as possible. Remember, quitting is not an option; always strive to finish strong.
