The Philippine Running Renaissance: Inclusivity Over Exclusivity

The current wave of enthusiasm for running in the Philippines is nothing short of a renaissance. From my early days of running in 2020, where fellow runners were a rare sight, we’ve surged to 2024 where every corner and street pulses with the rhythm of running shoes. This evolution fills me with immense joy, witnessing a myriad of ages and backgrounds unified by a singular goal: self-improvement.

Runners today explore the sport in myriad ways, whether it’s through a steady jog, a mix of walking and running, or interval sprints. The diversity in their methods underscores a collective striving for personal bests.

However, this positive surge is occasionally marred by negativity. Some individuals, who view themselves as “pioneers” of running in the Philippines, impose restrictive definitions of what qualifies one as a ‘runner.’ They suggest that only those who have completed a marathon or maintain a certain pace earn the title. This gatekeeping not only undermines the inclusive spirit of running but also discourages newcomers eager to embark on their running journeys.

Why must we dampen the spirits of those finding joy and fulfillment in running? Why not celebrate every stride, regardless of its speed or distance? If someone laces up their shoes and steps out the door to run, walk, or jog—they are a runner. No qualifications necessary.

The criticism some brandish reflects a deeper personal discontent, perhaps mirroring their own insecurities or challenges. Extending kindness could not only lighten their burdens but also enhance the collective spirit of our community. We must remember, the energy we exude influences our own emotions and those of others around us. Positivity breeds positivity.

So, to every person reading this—whether you sprint, jog, or walk—you are unequivocally a runner. Your journey is valid, your efforts are commendable, and your presence in the running community is celebrated. I stand with you, cheering for each kilometer you conquer, no matter the pace.

Let’s pledge to extend our support to every runner, nurturing an environment where everyone can thrive without judgment. Let’s replace gatekeeping with gate-opening, where every runner finds a place. After all, in this vast and diverse running landscape, there is more than enough road for all of us to share.

To our “pioneer” runners: let’s lead by example, fostering an atmosphere of support and encouragement. Our legacy in the running community should be marked not by exclusivity, but by how many people we inspire and uplift.

In the end, we all share the same path—we might as well enjoy the journey together.
